Sumner Lodge No. 334’s Innovative Masonic Membership Visibility Day Celebration
In August, Freemasons across Illinois participated in our 2023 Masonic Membership Visibility Day. This occasion, a celebration of being members of this most excellent fraternity, saw thousands of brethren across the state proudly display their affiliation with our fraternity. The Brothers of Sumner Lodge No. 334 led the way with an innovative approach to get young men to learn about Freemasonry, drive community visibility, and have fun. Their efforts even landed a wonderful story in the local newspaper! Here's how they did it:
The Grand Lodge of Illinois created Masonic Membership Visibility Day as an annual day of recognition to show who we – the Freemasons of Illinois – are as good men and what we do for one another and the communities throughout the state. At Sumner Lodge, we were excited to participate in this year's celebration and were proud to get our community involved.
As suggested by the Grand Lodge, we encouraged our members to wear Masonic insignia, but we decided to take this a step further. We planned an "Introduction to Freemasonry Youth Rally." Our course was uncharted, but we developed our plan with the guidance of some 18 & 19-year-old Brothers.
Our first dilemma was how to get young men to attend. We began with a personal letter of invitation to the sons and grandsons of our members. We then encouraged these young men to invite their school friends and sports teammates. We focused primarily on young men at the high school level, although we extended some invitations through age 21. The favorable response encouraged us.
The Rally began with a tour of the Lodge and a discussion of the origins of Masonry, Masonry's impact on America, and contemporary Freemasonry. We encouraged them to consider becoming Masons as they reached 18 but did not pressure them. As promised, after about 35 minutes, we relocated to a member's property for a Pond Party. Many of the young men's dads were Masons who had not been to lodge for a while. We were thrilled to see them helping with the party and hope to encourage further involvement!
The pictures paint a story of the Rally. These young men now have a clearer understanding of Freemasonry and what it means to be a member. Being part of their laughter, antics, and camaraderie was a privilege. Their favorable memories and the stories they will tell at school ensure our next Masonic Membership Visibility Day rally will be a success. We see them and believe them to be Masons in the Making. This year's celebration was indeed a wonderful day.
