Making the Most of the New Masonic Year: Advice from Illinois Brothers

Illinois Freemasonry is in the midst of one of the most active times of the year. Lodges across the state are bustling with degrees, fundraisers, parades, and fellowship. For more than 200 years, Illinois Freemasons have returned to Lodge, season after season, to strengthen bonds of Brotherhood and serve their communities.

This fall is the perfect time for our newest Brothers to get engaged by attending meetings, volunteering at events, and taking their first steps in building lasting connections. At the same time, it’s a season of opportunity for our longer-tenured members to lead by example. By acting as mentors, offering guidance, and extending a welcoming hand, they ensure that the spirit of our fraternity is carried forward and our Lodges remain strong for the next generation.

As you head into the fall season, you don’t have to search far for guidance. Brothers from across Illinois have shared their stories of loyalty and fellowship that show exactly what it means to get involved. Their experiences remind us that Freemasonry is not only about ritual and tradition, but about the bonds we build and the growth we inspire in one another.

Drawing on advice and experiences from Brothers across Illinois, here are three ways to make the most of the new Masonic year.

  1. Lean into Brotherhood

Brotherhood is the anchor of our Craft. It’s found in the Brother who checks in when life gets difficult, and in the Lodges that rally to support their members when they need it most.

For new members, Brotherhood means knowing you are never alone. A friendly face, a listening ear, and a steady hand are always close by in your Lodge. For those of us who have long been members, the fall season is a chance to be that steady presence by reaching out and strengthening the fabric of our fraternity one Brother at a time.

Just take it from Brother Jim Woodward of Streator Lodge No. 607, who shared how his mentor, Don Carpenter, guided him through one of the darkest times in his life: “He was a friend, a brother, and a mentor – proof that in our darkest moments, a Brother’s hand can guide us back.” His story is a reminder that Brotherhood is not just symbolic but very much lived in real and powerful ways.

2. Look for Opportunities for Fellowship

Camaraderie is what turns a Lodge into a family. It’s in the laughter after a meeting, the pride of marching in a parade, or the simple joy of gathering around a table with Brothers and their families.

For new members, fellowship is your invitation to get involved. Attend that first fall meeting, join a community event, or take part in a fundraiser; these really are the moments where bonds are formed. They will help shape your experience for years to come. You can find events on the Illinois Freemasonry Connect system.

For you, longtime members, showing up matters just as much. Your presence sets the tone, helping new Brothers feel at home and reminding everyone that fellowship is at the heart of our Craft.

As Right Worshipful Brother Angelo Deserio, Junior Grand Warden, put it: “To me, fellowship is the best part of being a Freemason. I love being with my Brothers, spending time with them and their families, and enjoying each other’s company as much as possible.”

3. Find and Offer Mentorship

Mentorship has been part of Freemasonry since the very beginning. In Illinois, the Lodge Intender program continues that tradition by pairing new members with trusted guides.

As RW Brother Johnnie Lovell of Columbia Lodge No. 474 reminds us: “Mentorship builds your Masonic education. The more we put into it, the better we all become.” His words capture the mutual benefit of mentorship – both mentor and mentee grow together.

For new members, fall is the perfect season to seek out that guidance. Ask questions, accept help, and learn from those who have walked the path before you. Know that there are plenty of Brothers who are eager to help you find your footing in the Craft.

For experienced Masons, now is the time to invest in mentorship. Think back to when you first joined, and you’ll quickly recognize that your encouragement, patience, and example will shape the future of Illinois Freemasonry.

Carrying the Light into Fall

We are excited that Lodge happenings have returned this season. But the return to Lodge is more than being physically present. It’s about living out the values that make Illinois Freemasonry strong.

As the calendar fills with degrees, fundraisers, and community events, let us all take this opportunity to engage more deeply with the fraternity and each other. Attend a meeting. Welcome a new face. Offer a word of guidance. Together, we carry the light of our Craft into another Masonic year and into the hearts of all who find a home in Illinois Freemasonry.
